Ted Marrs Obituary

Ted Carl Marrs, Jr.  passed away April 19, 2022, at the age of 92. He finished his earthly race and went to his eternal reward in Heaven surrounded by his family at home.  He left this world in the same manner that he lived his whole life, by making those around him smile and feel loved.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Friday April 22, 2022, at the Hidalgo Independent Christian Church. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 am on Friday at the church. Burial with Military Rites will be in the Aten Cemetery. The Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup, IL is assisting the family.

Ted was born August 8, 1929, in rural Hidalgo, the son of Ted and Ruth (Carr) Marrs. Ted graduated from Newton Community High School and then served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Upon returning home from the war, he met his wife Alice Bell Spencer, Daughter of Dorothy and Denzel Spencer of Yale, IL. Together they shared 67 happy years of marriage and had three daughters: Susan, Karen, and Amy.

Ted was a farmer through and through and was still raising cattle in his nineties. All of his grandchildren and great grandchildren will remember well watching him call in the cows during morning chores. A hard worker no doubt, Ted always knew that life was about more than work. There was never too much that needed done to prevent his mid-morning Snickers and Coke break.

Ted was an intellectually curious man and never lost the desire to learn something new. Although he would modestly claim otherwise, his mind was full of wisdom and knowledge that he shared freely. Ted was a lifelong reader and next to his recliner there was only one book that stayed consistently, his Bible. He lived his life according to that book and served as an example for his family and friends to strive towards. He chose to live life with optimism and gratitude when bitterness might have been the easier path.

He lived in Jasper County his entire life and was a lifelong member of the Hidalgo Independent Christian Church where he faithfully served and worshiped with his extended church family.

Ted is survived by his loving wife Alice, his baby sister, June (Jack) Cook,  his two daughters Susan Shull (Brad) and Karen Buettemeyer (Kim) and his farm partner and son-in-law, Robert Young (Marla). His three grandsons, Brady (Alissa), Brandon (Lindsay) and Brock, and 6 great-granddaughters Alivia, Faith, Amy, Hannah, Alice, and Savannah, who were the joy of his life, live to carry on his legacy.

He was preceded in death by his father Ted, his mother Ruth, his beloved sisters Angela (Bill) Will and Mickey (Olin) Blade, and his wonderful daughter Amy (Robert) Young.

He was truly a great man and will be missed dearly by all those lucky enough to have known him. Memorials can be made to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or to the Hope Food Pantry. Online condolences can be expressed at www.barkleyfuneralchapels.com
