Josephine, “Jo” Hawes, 83, of Greenup, IL passed away at 3:41 PM on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Mattoon, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, February 17, 2020 at the Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Sunday evening at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in the Greenup Cemetery.

Josephine was born in Newton, IL on April 29, 1936 to Charles and Mina (Yingst) Auteberry. She married Doris C. Ghast on January 7, 1956 and he preceded her in 1978; she later married Dean Hawes on July 12, 1997. Surviving his her husband; sons Bill Ghast, Bob Ghast and Bruce (Connie) Ghast; Step children Becky and Gary; grandchildren BJ Ghast, Dakota Ghast, Melanie Seymour, Sarah Ghast, Derek Ghast, Seth (Meghan) Ghast and Shelby (Jeff) Babbs; great grandchildren Alex, Sophia, Jacob, Nadylie, Kyler and Ralph and several step grand and great grandchildren; one sister Grace Stevens. She was preceded in death by her parents one daughter Betty Joan Ghast; brothers Maurice, John, Basil and Paul Auteberry; sisters Cletis O’dell, Florine Utley, Ruth Holley and Margaret Finn; one step grandchild.

Jo was a homemaker and worked as a nurses aide for many years; she also was an in home caregiver for several families in the community. She was a faithful member of the Greenup United Methodist Church for many years. Memorials can be made to the Greenup Methodist Church.
