John Edward Bland

John Edward Bland, 90 of Greenup, Illinois, passed away at 5:23 a.m. on Monday, February 10, 2020 at his home.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Friends Grove Cemetery rural Toledo, IL. Military rites will be conducted by the Cumberland County Veterans. The Barkley Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.

    He was born August 25, 1929 in Cumberland County, the son of Bert and Ladica (Kuhn) Bland.  He married Alberta Jean (Freeman) on August 5, 1950 in Reverend Collier's home.  She preceded him in death on January 27, 2007.  Also preceding him in death were his brother, Carl; his parents and a son-in-law David E Carr.

     Surviving are children, Judith Kay (Larry) Speakman of Jacksonville, Illinois, Gayle Ann Carr and Scott Edward (Christina) Bland of Greenup, six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Marylee Ross, of Toledo, Illinois.

     He served his country in the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant.  He worked from time to time in the Ettelbrick Shoe Company in Greenup, GarWood in Mattoon, Illinois, 13 years for Eubank Motor Sales in Greenup, and retired from Pyroferric International, Inc. in Toledo, Illinois after 25 years, after which he lovingly cared for his wife until her death.

       He enjoyed his family, especially the grandchildren, watching horse races, reading, and taking part in the afternoon coffee group at Casey's.
