Hugh Eubank Obituary

Hugh Ryland Eubank, 81 of Greenup, IL passed away at the Cumberland Rehab and Health Care Center in Greenup on the evening of Monday, April 12, 2021 with his family at his side.   He had a long battle with Alzheimer’s and suffered a stroke in recent days.

Hugh was born November 10, 1939 to Ralph and Elizabeth (Larrabee) Eubank in Effingham IL.    Hugh grew up in Greenup and graduated from Cumberland High School (Class of ’57) and Eastern Illinois University in 1960.  He married his high school sweetheart, Carole Sue Wade, on August 28, 1960, and they moved to Findlay, Ohio where Hugh began his accounting and business career, and they started their family.

He worked for Marathon Oil Company in Findlay, OH for eight years.  They moved their family back to Greenup in 1968 and Hugh worked for Craig and Craig Law Firm in Mattoon IL for twelve years as their accountant and office manager.  In 1980, Hugh and Carole purchased Fred Wylde & Co in Greenup, IL and entered business together as independent insurance agents.  Hugh retired in 2010 but kept his office at the agency until 2020 to stay connected with the community and as the base for his volunteer work.

Hugh spent his life giving to his community.   He joined the Greenup Fire Department in the mid 70’s and was Greenup Fire Chief from 1979 – 1985.  During his tenure as Chief, he brought in new training protocols and modernized equipment.   He retired from the fire department after 26 years of service.    Hugh also was a driver for the Greenup Community Ambulance Service for over 20 years.   He was a member of the Greenup Presbyterian Church.  Hugh was a founding board member and President of Greenup Industries.  During his time on the board, new businesses/facilities were brought to Greenup including Evapco, Inc. and Dr. Greg Dill, DDS.   He also was a Trustee for the Jay Hayden Foundation for 20+ years, was a past President of the Cumberland Nursing Center Board of Directors, and President of the 911 Board – helping to bring 911 services to Cumberland County.

Hugh loved fishing, coon and deer hunting and topped off most summers with an annual Canada fishing trip, which started as a family tradition with his father and grandfather that Hugh continued with his own sons and grandsons and many great friends.  He loved cabinet and furniture building, creating many heirlooms for his children and grandchildren. Hugh also loved gardening.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, son David (Julie) Eubank of Greenup and daughter Lisa (Jeffery) Dunn of Hermitage TN and daughter-in-law Kim Eubank of Greenup; grandchildren Logan (Ashleigh) Eubank, Emily (Aaron) Bernasconi, Katie (Shawn) Gruning, Eric (Hannah) Dunn, Lauter (Derek) Ghast, Elias Eubank; and great-grandchildren Ryland Dunn, Eleanor Bernasconi, Evie Mae Eubank and Winnie Rey Dunn.  Hugh is survived by his sister Laura (Jim) Allison of Oklahoma City, OK.  He was preceded in death by his son Daniel Eubank, his parents, and sisters Barbara Eubank and Debbie Driessen.
