Donald Stewart Obituary

Donald Stewart, 98, of Effingham, formerly of Greenup, passed away at 1:38 pm on Wednesday June 12, 2024, at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

Funeral services and Masonic Rites will begin at 11:00 am on Tuesday June 18, 2024, at the Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am until service time on Tuesday June 18, 2024, at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in the Greenup Cemetery with Military Rites by the Cumberland County Veterans.

Donald was born in Greenup, IL., October 28, 1925, the youngest of four children to Roy and Gladys Stewart. He was a lifelong resident of Greenup, and his hometown was near and dear to his heart. Don married Marcella Draper on December 8, 1946. They raised two kids, Susan and Joe, who also shared their love for Greenup.  Don worked odd jobs growing up as most did during that time, and was a truck driver for his dad, prior to serving in the Navy during WWII. At the end of the war, Don returned to Greenup where he married Marcella and was self-employed with his bull dozing service for 50 years until retirement. During that time, he literally changed the appearance of the countryside of Cumberland County with his machinery working in most areas of the county. It would be difficult to find a person who enjoyed their working life as much as Don did. He was a lifetime member of the Greenup Presbyterian Church, VFW, American Legion, the Odd Fellows, Kiwanis Club, Volunteer Greenup Firefighter, served on the nursing home board, and he was recognized as a 32nd degree Mason. He also managed to roll a perfect game at the Greenup Bowling Alley during league play.  The family enjoyed Lake Mattoon and Lake Sara and made it a point to go as much as they could during the summers. Don and Marcella were married 66 years when she passed away on February 28, 2013. He is survived by his daughter Susan of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; son Joe and his wife Cheryl of Sperry, IA; their son Curtiss Johnson of Cedar Rapids and his two children Zachary Johnson from Cedar Rapids, and Lindsay Johnson, of Iowa City, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bill (Donna) Stewart, and sisters Ruby (Jim Wylde), and Betty (Kenneth) Quinn.

Memorials can be made to the Greenup Presbyterian Church, Cumberland Rehab Auxiliary, or to the Greenup Fire Department.
