Donald Richard McMechan

Donald Richard McMechan, 93, of Greenup, IL passed away at 10:15 am on Sunday October 2, 2022, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Thursday October 6, 2022, at 2:00 pm at the Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 2:00 pm October 6, 2022, at the Barkley Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Greenup Cemetery.

Don was born May 8, 1929, in Greenup, IL, the son of Harry and Alice (Cougill) McMechan. He married Sally Bland and to this union four children were born: Donald Ray, Richard, Larry, and Terry. Later he married Betty Patrick, and she preceded him in death in 1989. Survivors include son, Donald Ray McMechan; daughter Terry Freeman; grandchildren, Jason (Roni Sue) McMechan, Joshua (Tracie) McMechan, Dona (David) Yaw, Jacob (Lisa) McMechan, Jess (Amy) McMechan, Raelynn McMechan and fiancé Chase Nakano, Matthew (Monica) Freeman, Luke (Misty) Freeman, and Wayne (Janice) Lowe; 29 great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren; and special nephew Gary “Pee Wee” McMechan. He was preceded in death by his parents, sons Richard and Larry McMechan; three grandsons Tom Lucas, Jerry Lowe, and Quint McMechan; three brothers Kenneth, Bob, and Harold “Pete” McMechan; and two sisters Lena Neese, and Mary Dickman.

Don was a heavy equipment operator for many years with Union Local 841. In Don’s younger days, he also farmed, worked in the Steel Mill, and for the railroad in Chicago, IL. Don always enjoyed driving his tractor in the local parades, and he loved going on side by side rides with his family any chance he could get.
