Nov. 30, 1948 - Sept. 14, 2011 Paul Eugene Vaughan, age 62 of Greenup, IL was taken home to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 11:30 pm on Wednesday September 14, 2011, surrounded by his loving family. The visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Saturday evening at the funeral chapel. Funeral services will be on Sunday September 18, 2011 at 2:00 pm at the Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup, IL with Pastor Keith Brown officiating. Burial with full Military rites conducted by Cumberland County Veterans will be in the Jack Oak Cemetery.

Paul was born on November 30, 1948 in Parkersburg, WV to Betty Lou Vaughan. He was raised by his grandparents William Everett Vaughan and Opal Edna Clark Vaughan in Parkersburg. He graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1966 and attended Mountain State Business School before enlisting in the US Army in 1968. He served our country for 20 years, including tours in Germany and Korea, and retired in 1988 at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3.

He married Carol Sue Carlen on October 30, 1982 at Jack Oak Church of God. They had a loving marriage of almost 29 years. Their only child, Michelle Lynn was born at Fort Drum, NY.

Paul, Carol & Michelle moved to rural Greenup in 1989. Paul worked at Ben Tire in Toledo, and for the past 18 years, he worked for the Cumberland Unit 77 school district as a school bus driver. He served as a dedicated President of the Cumberland Education Support Personnel union for several years, as well as a member of the Region 7 Council of the Illinois Education Association. During these years of service, Paul faithfully attended all the IEA and NEA conferences, meetings and conventions that his health allowed.

Paul was a loyal member of the Jack Oak Church of God where he served currently as an elder and trustee and formerly as a Sunday school teacher and a deacon. He was also a member of both the American Legion and the VFW.

Paul is survived by his loving wife and dedicated caregiver, Carol of Greenup, daughter Michelle (Colby) Peters of Toledo, mother-in-law Lydia Carlen of Greenup, sisters Diane Flynn of Virginia; Brenda (Chuck) Smith and Connie (Mike) Misamore, all of Findlay, OH; and brother Keston Leisure Jr. of Colorado. Also surviving are his in-laws Sally & Julian Huffman of Toledo, Cheryl & Ken Nation of Oblong, Joyce & Bill Leftault of El Paso, TX, Floyd Jr. & Angie Carlen of Shiremantown, PA, and Joseph Carlen of Greenup. Paul is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Paul was preceded in death by his mother, grandparents, and father-in-law Floyd (Podger) Carlen.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donation be made to the National Foundation for Cancer Research 4600 East West Highway suite 525 Bethesda, MD 20814 or to Lincolnland Hospice box 372 Mattoon, IL. 61938. Although Paul was not a smoker, he battled for 3 years with lung cancer. During his treatments, Paul touched the hearts of the doctors and nurses who treated him with his caring, open heart.
