Dr. Lowell E. (Doc) Massie, 96 of Mattoon, IL and formerly of Toledo, IL went home to his maker on September 14, 2011 at 3:50 AM at Gowin Parc in Mattoon, IL.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM on Saturday September 17, 2011 at the Toledo Christian Church 501 S. Maryland St. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday evening at the church. Barkley Funeral Chapel in Toledo, IL is assisting the family. Burial will be in the Toledo Cemetery.

Lowell was born to C.C. and Alice (Willoughby) Massie on August 10, 1915 in Toledo, IL. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois in 1937. That same year he married his U of I classmate Nellie Berry on December 24. He then attended and graduated in 1940 from the U of I College of Medicine. After a year of residency he and Nellie returned to Toledo, IL, in 1941 where he and Dr. Rhodes established the Rhodes Clinic. Dr. Massie practiced medicine 52 years and then retired and sold the clinic to Sarah Bush Lincoln in 1993.

Dr. Massie was a charter member of the American Board of Family Practice, Academy of Family Practice, Toledo Kiwanis and the Toledo Masonic Lodge. He served on the boards of the Toledo Village, Cumberland Co. Public Health and Toledo Development. He was a lifelong member of the Toledo Christian Church. He was named Illinois Family Physician of the year in 1987 by the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians.

"Doc" enjoyed fishing, bowling, tennis, traveling and gardening. He especially enjoyed his family and rose garden.

He is survived by his wife of almost 74 years, Nellie. Four children Margaret (Phil) Kellogg of Arlington, VA, Carolyn (Dick) Hayden of Mattoon, Curtis (Modena) Massie of Oswego, IL and Linda (Mike) Shull of Greenup. Grandchildren Scott Shull of Toledo, Clint Shull of Greenup, Beth Hayden of Chicago, John Hayden of Windsor, Lowell Massie of Montgomery, Heather Sirek of Yorkville, Steve Kellogg of Norfolk, VA, and Catherine Pryor of Freeport, ME. 14 great grandchildren and 4 step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, step mother Maude, 2 sisters and one brother.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Toledo Christian Church or to the Sumpter Twp. Library.
