Dorothy Marie (Payne) Stewart, age 100 plus 11 ½ months, of Greenup, IL passed away at 11:15 AM on Sunday, March 31, 2019 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Mattoon, IL.
Dorothy was born on April 15, 1918 the daughter of Fred Quincy Payne and Temperance Elsie (Wright) Payne in Jasper County, IL.
She graduated from Casey High School in 1936 and worked at various jobs until she married Walter Marshall Stewart in 1940, at which time she became a full-time farmer’s wife and partner.
Together they had 3 children; James L. (Millie) of Greenup, IL, Richard L. (Agnes) of Moline, IL, Diane L. (Terry) Bell of Windsor, IL. They have 6 grandchildren; Angel (Stewart) Carter, Russell Stewart, Keith Stewart, Vanessa (Stewart) Johnson, April (Bell) Schultz, Robin (Bell) Montgomery, 11 great-grandchildren and 3 great great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a nephew, Don Stewart of Greenup, IL, brother-in-law, Raymond Bott of Paxton, IL, nephews Raymond Bott Jr. of Urbana, IL and Donald Bott of Paxton, IL.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter in 1991, her parents, her stepmother, Gladys Davis Payne, one sister, Madonna Faith Payne and half-sister, Gloria Ann (Payne) Bott
Dorothy attended the Greenup Baptist Church for several years and regularly attended the Jewett Community Church.
Dorothy was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother who embraced each moment spent with her family. She always had a good story to share, a positive outlook, wonderful sense of humor and a smile for everyone. Dorothy enjoyed her garden and beautiful flowers and plants.
Funeral services will be held in her honor at the Jewett Community Church at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 with Pastor Irvin Figgins officiating. Visitation will be 2 hours prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Harmony Cemetery rural Greenup. The Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup is assisting the family.
