Malcolm L. "Mack" Ross

November 28, 1918 ~ November 8, 2011 (age 92) 92 Years Old

Nov. 28, 1918 - Nov. 8, 2011

Malcolm L. "Mack" Ross, 92, of Toledo, died at his home in the early morning hours of Tuesday November 8, 2011. He was a retired farmer, cancer survivor, World War II veteran, and devoted family man.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Friday November 11, 2011 at the Barkley Funeral Chapel in Toledo. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday evening at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in the Toledo Cemetery.

He was born November 28, 1918, in Cumberland County, the son of Bonnie Ross. During World War II, he served on the Army radar patrol at the Panama Canal. Due to a misunderstanding, he was reported killed in action in Europe. His obituary was printed in local newspapers and a funeral service was held. Of course, his family was overjoyed to learn of the mistake. M.L. cheated death a second time in his forties when, after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, the disease miraculously disappeared and remained in remission for the rest of his life.

He lived in or near Toledo for most of his life. In the 1970's he served on the village board and as President of Toledo Grain Company. Besides Farming, M.L. spent time working at the Ettelbrick Shoe Factory and was a truck driver for many years. During retirement, he and his wife of more than sixty years, Marylee (nee Bland), were "snowbirds" wintering in Florida for nearly two decades. Over the course of his life, M.L. also traveled to all fifty states.

Survivors include his wife, Marylee Ross; four children, Emily (Jim) Adams of Bartonville, and Alan Ross, Garry (Pam) Ross and Cheryl (Dan) Flood all of Toledo; six grandchildren, Kathy, Kris, Kara, Ryan, Drew and Olivia; twelve great-grandchildren; one half- sister Betty Bowman of Toledo.

He was preceded in death by his mother, half- brother Dean Hardy and an infant son Michael Ross. Memorials can be made to the Life Center of Cumberland County or to the American Cancer Association.
